Kuttor Residence Association joins Hand with Clean and Green Tiruvalla

Meeting at Kuttor Resident association decided to install four ring compost system on pilot basis as model. This has been decided in the meeting organized by the resident association in part with Clean and Green Tiruvalla." "This will be a model for the colony and the same will be replicated to all houses. This is as part of our initiative to manage waste at the source itself". Mr. Shaji (President, Resident Association) said. In addition to this, it has decided to start small scale farming in every houses.

JP Nagar Stage 2 initiates Clean and Green Tiruvalla

Recently concludes meeting at JP Nagar Stage 2 Tiruvalla starts to think for the implementation of Clean and Green Tiruvalla project concept. Rev. Dr. Abraham Mulamoottil (Project Director - Clean and Green Tiruvalla & Chief Executive and Chairman of Pushpagiri Group of Institutions) emphasized  the need of decentralized system of waste management. He presented a detailed plan and mechanism to collect non - biodegradable wastes and reiterated that these are not wastes but resources. So we termed it as resource management instead of waste management.  "We are creating wastes; so we are responsible to manage it. It is folly to blame Municipality or authorities in the issue of waste. We should cultivate a habit to manage waste at the source itself. Thereby, let's create a sustainable world." He said.

Mr. Paul V. Mathew (Project Officer, Clean and Green Tiruvalla) explained about different technics and mechanisms to manage bio degradable wastes at the source. He put foreword a notion to declare JP Nagar Stage 2 as the first 'Zero Waste Resident Association' in Tiruvalla Municipality by utilizing this technologies.

Clean and Green Tiruvalla getting boost

The project initiated by MACFAST in association with Tiruvalla Municipality and the the concept decentralized system of waste management now becomes the core attraction and solution to the issue of waste. The Conference organized by The Malyala Manorama unanimously accepted this idea to propagate for clean and green environment.  Rev. Dr. Abraham Mulamoottil (Project Director of Clean and Green Tiruvalla, Chairman and Chief Executive of Pushpagiri Group of Institutions) - brain behind the project, was the chief guest of the Conference. Clean and Green City' is an initiative jointly launched by the municipality and the Mar Athanasios College for Advanced Studies, Thiruvalla (Macfast). "It is to make Thiruvalla a model, waste-free, green, and clean town through a systematic environment awareness campaign with active people's participation.To make a Model City that is Waste-free, Green and Healthy, accomplish the creation of a ‘Clean and Green City Tiruvalla’ - a sustainable model for waste management, eco friendly practices and greening with all environmental aspects for the whole city thereby proving that waste management is  viable, cost effective and financially  sustainable are the key vision of the project First and foremost, the project envisions a paradigm shift in the attitude of community from Not In My Backyard (NIMBY) syndrome to In My Backyard (IMBY) habit. In other words enable the community to ‘segregate and dispose the waste at the source itself’ is the core theme of the project. Creative and effective awareness, systematic implementation and enhanced community support are the real ways out for the problems of wastes. A social and structural transformation can be triggered by strengthening community participation and public-private partnerships. If we created waste it is our responsibility to manage it". He said. He appreciated the commitment and novel initiatives of Malayala Manorama towards nature and environment like Sukrutha Keralam, Palathuli project, Save Energy, Bhoomikkoru Kuda etc.

'Green Tiruvalla - extending to Green Kerala shall be our dream. Except effluent treatment plant, a decentralized system of waste management should be our strategy in waste management and that should be in policy level too" John V Abraham (Director Medical Mission, Tiruvalla) said. Mr. Roy Mathew (Senior Agricultural Officer) gave emphasis on legislation, technology, subsidies and existing projects of Government.

While concluding, Chris Thomas (Senior Coordinating Editor, The Malayalam Manorama) said that "Malayala Manorama will take the issue and project concept very seriously. Exhibitions to demonstrate different technologies and Success stories, Seminars, Creation of model Village and Colonies are the immediate priority of Manorama. In order to make it effective and to strengthen the initiative, we will ensure support of different NGO's.

PATHANAMTHITTA: All schools, including Anganwadis, within Thiruvalla municipal limits will soon launch a weekly ‘green hour' as part of the ‘Green and Clean City' initiative jointly launched by the municipality and the Mar Athanasios College for Advanced Studies, Thiruvalla (Macfast).
A meeting of various school authorities held at the municipal town hall in Thiruvalla on Tuesday decided to launch the drive with a view to imparting environment conservation training to children, said Fr. Abraham Mulamoottil, chairman of Pushpagiri Group of Institutions, who is also the chairman of the Green and Clean City project.
Talking to The Hindu, Fr. Mulamoottil said the mission was to make Thiruvalla a model, waste-free, green, and clean town through a systematic environment awareness campaign with active people's participation.
He said the proposed ‘green hour' would help make children and the staff of schools aware of the importance of eco-friendly waste management and keeping the environment clean. Fr. Mulamoottil, who was the Principal of Macfast till a month ago, had effectively implemented the scheme on the college campus.
Municipal chairperson Lynda Thomas said the local body and Macfast would jointly organise awareness seminars on environment at all educational institutions in the municipal limits. The municipality would also initiate punitive measures against callous dumping of garbage at public places, disregarding the directions of the local body, said K. Sudheer, municipal secretary.
Fr. Muklamoottil said “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Refuse, Repair, and Rethink” are the six ‘R's constituting the base of the project which encouraged a decentralised mechanism for waste management, propping up the idea to make wealth out of waste.
Implementation of concepts such as bio-parks, green schools, eco parks, knowledge centres, etc. in a phased manner would give more thrust to the project, he said.
According to him, green waste management was a boon to the environment as it used techniques that disposed waste in an eco-friendly manner. This strategy would lead to an interim scenario of barest minimum of waste generation that needed to be disposed at the source itself and, ultimately, to the concept of ‘zero waste.'

Bid for Initiating Decentralized System of Waste Management

It was a unanimous opinion; segregate, manage and dispose waste at the source itself. The meeting of Resident and Merchant Associations organized by Tiruvalla Municipality and MACFAST College as a part of Clean and Green Tiruvalla Project reiterated this notion. While delivering welcome address Mr. Sudheer (Municipal Secretary) said; “We are very much aware about the ongoing mechanism of waste management and it is completely unscientific in all scene.  The concept put forwarded by Clean and Green Tiruvalla is the only solution to find an everlasting solution to the issue of existing menace of waste. We are expected to learn how to manage waste at the source itself. An academic spirit to learn and develop suitable technologies is required to tackle this problem and to practice this notion. As part of the project, we are scheduling to organize an exhibition and seminar which will introduce and demonstrate such technologies.  Municipality is planning to install a waste treatment plant in this compound to exhibit how decentralized system of waste management possible and it will be a model one. Recently concluded meeting of education institutions was very successful and we have so many positive responses from schools. In addition to this, ‘Green School’ – a project for Developing Green Habits among Students for a Sustainable World will be launched soon. Rev. Fr. Abraham Mulamootil (Chairman and Chief Executive Pushpagiri Group of Institutions) delivered the key note address. “Decentralized system of waste management now becomes the policy matter of State as well as Central Government. As a place with sufficient developed country experiences, Tiruvalla seems to be a model in effective waste management. Today we consider gold as precious and tomorrow water will cost more than gold. Now we are polluting air and in future we will struggle for fresh air. Deforestation is rampant now and in future species will wander for habitat. Today we are wasting food and tomorrow we will race for food. We need to work for a better India and for a sustainable world. He said.

While opened for discussion, different suggestions arise. Some of the common suggestions are as follows

1.      Municipality should take initiative to strengthen all legislations

2.      Municipality shall provide subsidy for waste management technologies

3.      Rules for establishments should follow while giving or renewing license

4.      Waste treatment plant can make mandate in new houses while giving House Number

5.      Municipality shall organize awareness camps in schools and houses in ward levels

6.      An exhibition can organize to introduce different waste management technologies

“Awareness has a key role in spreading the idea of Clean and Green Tiruvalla and our dream can actualize by ensuring this very effective. It should extend to all wards and schools in Tiruvalla Municipality. Our Project team has already started their works in schools and anyone can make use of the project team”

When to call a spade a spade 'the actions for proclaiming humanity getting the glimpse of hope'. It sprouts and spreads like a wildfire in the mind of every human.  When we open our eyes to see the real world, really a feeling of 'giving up' of our greed. It was an outstanding day in all sense. The team 'Rendezvous' colored this day  with love,wisdom, humanity and brotherhood with a good mix of entertainment.  The movie that shown in this Wednesday gathering crumpled and augmented the beats of hearts which persuaded us '"Give your eyes to light our world" .

`Service to humanity is service to God’ came true here in MACFAST by distributing 'Gifts' - our symbol of care and love to the students of Government School, Kuttoor. It pronounces the duty bestowed on us - 'Open our eyes and ease our hands to offer care'. When students of MACFAST released their hands to offer care and love, it reiterates that it is our duty and  responsibility to work for a better world. " 'Share' - when we share, it multiplies" - the words of Santhosh (Coordinator, Rays of Love) call us for  gripping our foots to move with great pace in promulgating humanity; through small but great actions. Responding to the caring hands of 'Rays of Love', one of the teachers (Kuttoor Government school) commented - " What we are lacking in this world; the real lacuna - Love and Humanity - You -'Rays of Love' now in the path to fill this gap. Thanks for the helping hand" 

Encouraged by the inspiring initiative of Rays of Love, Fr. Pradeep (Principal, MACFAST) offered 14  kits for students which augmented his charisma.

The awareness program organized by Tiruvalla Municipality and MACFAST College under the banner of Clean and Green Tiruvalla brings an apparent shift in the obsolete concept of waste management. Participants unanimously accepted the need of a decentralized waste management mechanism to find an everlasting solution to the dreadful menace of waste. While delivering key note address, Rev. Dr. Aabraham Mulamoottil (Project Director, CGT and Chairman of Pushpagiri Group of Institutions) reiterated the aim of Clean and Green City Project – NIMBY (Not In My Back Yard) Syndrome to INMBY (In My Back Yard) Habit that looks for a paradigm shift in the attitude of community towards waste management.  Addition to this, he put forward an idea of 'Green Hour' which provides a creative platform for students and staffs to raise their environmental consciousness.  Citing the successful implementation of Green Hour in MACFAST, he explained this novel practice. 'Green Hour' comprises of three sections. It starts with 'Tip of the day', followed by the 'brain storming' on the tip it concludes with an 'internal/self reflection'.  This can make more colorful by incorporating innovative activities and themes of students and teachers. “Duty bestowed up on is the preservation of our nature and conservation of resources for the coming generations. It is hard to think when our future generations to be a victim of our haphazard interventions and to blame our evildoings. It is our duty to bring the message of ‘GO GREEN. SAVE EARTH’ to our growing generation for a sustainable future”. He said. 
"Schools are effective platform for awareness and it will be the most fruitful effort that we can deliver.  Our commitment to impart the vision of 'Green Earth' has a pivotal role in this scenario. I ensure all the supports of our project team for inculcating this mission in education institutions. We are now in full swing to step in to schools with the vision of sustainable world." Rev. Fr. Pradeep Vazhatharamalayil (Principal, MACFAST) said. 

It not requires one day to making the city clean and green but it needs years to reach the target. But it can augment, if we realize the truth – ‘Nature is for human beings and Human beings are not for Nature’. We are creating waste and we are responsible to manage it too. It is folly to think, waste management is the task of Municipality or Government. If we have a mind to consider things in positive direction, nothing can hinder us from move in direction. Meeting concluded with a message, "All depend up on our decisons and our attitude determines our actions. A sustainable world is possible if we join hands together for a common cause”

ഇന്ന് പരിസ്ഥിതി ദിനമാണ്. ദിവസങ്ങള്‍ കടന്നുപോകും തോറും പാരിസ്ഥിതിക ദുരന്തങ്ങള്‍ ഏറുകയാണ്; കുറയുകയല്ല. നയങ്ങള്‍
തല തിരിഞ്ഞുപോകുമ്പോള്‍ ചീത്ത അകത്തും നല്ലത് പുറത്തുമാവുന്നു

തവള മണ്ണിരയോടു ചോദിച്ചു
പൂമ്പാറ്റകള്‍ എന്നു മടങ്ങിവരും
മണ്ണിര പറഞ്ഞു
ചിറകുകള്‍ ഞാനും തേടുകയാണ്

വിദഗ്ധക്കോയ്മകളും ജൈവശാസ്ത്രസ്ഥാപനങ്ങളും ഏറെയുള്ള ലോകത്തില്‍ മറ്റൊരു പരിസ്ഥിതിദിനം കൂടി കടന്നുവരികയാണ്. ഒന്നുകില്‍ ഭൂമി സ്വയം അതിജീവിക്കാന്‍ ശ്രമിക്കും. അല്ലെങ്കില്‍ മനുഷ്യനു വിവേകം വേണമെന്ന ബോധം ഉണ്ടാകും. ചിപ്‌ക്കോ ആന്ദോളന്‍ പോരാളിയായ സുന്ദര്‍ലാല്‍ ബഹുഗുണ കേരളത്തില്‍ വന്നപ്പോള്‍ പറഞ്ഞതിന്റെ പൊരുള്‍ ഇനിയും പലര്‍ക്കും മനസ്സിലായില്ല. ഇവിടെ ഒത്തുകൂടിയവര്‍ ഓരോരുത്തരും ഒരു മരം നട്ടിരുന്നുവെങ്കില്‍ കേരളം വൃക്ഷനിബിഢമായേനെ എന്ന്. അനുഗൃഹീതമായ ഈ താഴ്‌വര മുച്ചൂടും നശിപ്പിക്കാന്‍ കച്ചകെട്ടിയിരിക്കുന്നവര്‍ തന്നെയാണ് കാലത്തിന്റെ കാറ്റ് തിരിച്ചറിയാത്തത്. ഓരോ ദിനങ്ങള്‍ കടന്നുപോകുമ്പോഴും ലോകത്തില്‍ പാരിസ്ഥിതിക ദുരന്തങ്ങള്‍ ഏറുകയാണ്. അനുഭവിക്കേണ്ടി വരുന്നവരാകട്ടെ അരികിലേക്കു പുറന്തള്ളപ്പെട്ട സാധാരണക്കാരും സ്ത്രീകളും കുട്ടികളും ജീവജാലങ്ങളുമാണ്. യൂറോപ്പില്‍ ആണവനിലയങ്ങള്‍ അടച്ചുപൂട്ടിക്കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുമ്പോള്‍ തെക്കു പടിഞ്ഞാറന്‍ കാലവര്‍ഷക്കാറ്റിനു കൂട്ടായി കന്യാകുമാരിക്കടുത്ത് ആണവനിലയത്തിനു മുറവിളി കേള്‍ക്കുന്നു. വികസിതസ്വര്‍ഗരാജ്യമായ ജപ്പാനില്‍നിന്നു കേട്ടുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന വാര്‍ത്തകള്‍ ആശാസ്യമല്ല. ആണവമാലിന്യങ്ങള്‍ കടലിലും കരയിലും നിറയുന്നു. കൂനിന്മേല്‍ കുരുവെന്നോണം താപനിലയം നമുക്കും വേണം.

പുതിയ ബഹുവിഷമസന്ധിയിലൂടെ ലോകം കടന്നുപോകുകയാണ്. ക്ഷാമഭീഷണി, കാലാവസ്ഥാമാറ്റം, ഭക്ഷ്യസുരക്ഷ, ഉര്‍വരതാനഷ്ടം, ശുദ്ധജലനാശം, പുതുരോഗങ്ങള്‍, ഈ-വേയ്സ്റ്റ്, പ്രകൃതിവിഭവങ്ങളുടെ ശോഷണം, പരിസ്ഥിതിദുര്‍ബലപ്രദേശങ്ങളുടെ കൈയേറ്റം, വനനാശം, എന്നിങ്ങനെ മനുഷ്യന്റെ ഇടപെടല്‍കൊണ്ടുമാത്രം ദുരിതമനുഭവിക്കേണ്ടിവരുന്ന ഭൂമിയുടെ നിലനില്പിനായി നമുക്കെന്തു ചെയ്യാന്‍ കഴിയും. വിഷമസന്ധിയിലൂടെ മലനാടു കടന്നുപോകുമ്പോഴും സാക്ഷരതാകേരളത്തിനു മാധ്യമങ്ങള്‍ ഇതറിയിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുമ്പോഴും പാരിസ്ഥിതികമായ പ്രതിസന്ധികള്‍ നാം നേരിട്ടുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുകയാണ്. കഴിഞ്ഞ രണ്ടുദശകങ്ങളില്‍ ആത്മാര്‍ഥതയുള്ള പരിസ്ഥിതിപ്രവര്‍ത്തകരുടെ ആവേശകരമായ ശ്രമഫലമായി ബോധ-ബോധനതലത്തില്‍ നാം ഏറെ മുന്നോട്ടുപോയിട്ടുണ്ട്. വിദ്യാഭ്യാസരംഗത്ത് പരിസ്ഥിതിവിജ്ഞാനത്തിന് പ്രാധാന്യം ലഭിച്ചു. അങ്ങനെ സെമിനാര്‍ കേളികളും നടന്നു, ഫ്ലക്‌സ് ബോര്‍ഡുകളുയര്‍ന്നു. പ്ലാച്ചിമടയിലെ കൊക്കകോളാ വിരുദ്ധസമരവും അതിരപ്പിള്ളി സമരവും എന്‍ഡോസള്‍ഫാന്‍ നിരോധനസമരവും വിജയം കണ്ടപ്പോള്‍ മറ്റുകൊച്ചുകൊച്ചു സമരങ്ങള്‍ പരാജയപ്പെട്ടുപോയി.

എന്നാലിന്ന് പുലികളും ആനകളും കാട്ടുപോത്തുകളും പന്നികളും നാട്ടിലിറങ്ങിയതിന്റെ വാര്‍ത്തകള്‍ ഹരമാകുന്നു. കാട്ടിലും സുരക്ഷിതത്വം നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടു. ആനകളെ മയക്കുവെടിവെക്കാന്‍ കാട്ടിലും നാട്ടിലും വിദഗ്ധന്മാര്‍ തയ്യാറായിനിന്നു. ഇതാണ് പരിസ്ഥിതി പരിതാവസ്ഥ.

ടൂറിസം 'തൂറിസ'മായി കായലുകള്‍ മലീമസമായി. 'സുന്ദര' മായ നാഷണല്‍ ഹൈവേകളുടെ അരികിലെ മാലിന്യക്കൂമ്പാരങ്ങളുടെ നടുവില്‍, ഇവിടെ മാലിന്യം നിക്ഷേപിക്കരുത്, എന്ന ബോര്‍ഡ് സ്ഥാപിക്കാന്‍ ജാഥയായെത്തി തിരിച്ചുപോകുന്നു. വിവാഹം, സല്‍ക്കാരങ്ങള്‍ എന്നിവയുടെ ബാക്കിഭക്ഷണങ്ങള്‍ നാട്ടുകുളങ്ങളിലും വയലുകളിലും റോഡരികിലും മാന്യമായി തട്ടുന്നു. പ്ലാസ്റ്റിക്കില്‍ കെട്ടിയ ബോംബുകള്‍ എറിയുകയും അതു ശ്വസിച്ചൊരു വഴിനടത്തവുമാകാം. ഗ്ലൗസുപോലും ഉപയോഗിക്കാതെ നഗരങ്ങളിലെ തൂപ്പുകാരും കുടുംബശ്രീ സഹോദരിമാരും ചെയ്യുന്ന സേവനങ്ങള്‍ ആരാണ് തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞിട്ടുള്ളത്. തോട്ടികള്‍ക്ക് മാന്യമായ ജീവിതം ഉണ്ടാക്കാന്‍ സമരം ചെയ്തത് ഗാന്ധിജിയാണ്. ലാലൂരും ചക്കംകണ്ടവും വിളപ്പില്‍ശാലയും കേരളീയന്റെ വ്യാജമായ പരിസ്ഥിതിബോധത്തിന്റെ ജീവിക്കുന്ന സ്മാരകങ്ങളാണ്. അധരവ്യായാമം അത്താഴത്തിനു കൂട്ട്. പ്രാദേശിക കൂട്ടായ്മയുണ്ടാക്കി പ്രായോഗികമായി മുന്നേറുക എന്ന സന്തുലിത വികസനമന്ത്രത്തിനുപകരം വിനാശതന്ത്രങ്ങളാണ് മിക്കവരും പിന്തുടരുന്നത്. പരിസ്ഥിതി സംരക്ഷണത്തിനായി ഇത്രയധികം മുറവിളികള്‍ നടക്കുന്നതിനു സമാന്തരമായാണ് കാണെക്കാണെ നശീകരണവും നടക്കുന്നത്.

ഭാരതപ്പുഴ സംരക്ഷണത്തിനുവേണ്ടി എത്രയധികം പ്രോജക്ടുകളുണ്ടായി. ഇപ്പോള്‍ മണല്‍ വ്യാപാരമായി, നിയമാനുസൃതമായി. ഓണ്‍ലൈന്‍ ബുക്കിങ്ങായി. ഭൂസംരക്ഷണത്തിനുള്ള വിഭാഗം തന്നെ പാറപൊട്ടിക്കാന്‍ ലൈസന്‍സു നല്‍കുന്നു. വയല്‍സംരക്ഷണനിയമം കാറ്റില്‍ പറത്തുന്നത് ആരാണ്. പുഴ മലിനീകരണത്തിനു ഒത്താശ ചെയ്യുന്നവരാരാണ്. മായം ചേര്‍ക്കാന്‍ കൂട്ടുചേരുന്നതാരാണ് എന്നൊക്കെ നമുക്കറിയാമെങ്കിലും എല്ലാം ആവര്‍ത്തിക്കുന്നു. ആവര്‍ത്തനവാദം വഴി മാറ്റമുണ്ടാകുകയില്ലെന്ന ബോധം ജനങ്ങളിലുണ്ടായിരിക്കുന്നു. പരിവര്‍ത്തനത്തിന് ഇച്ഛാശക്തിയുള്ള വിദ്യാര്‍ഥികളും യുവജനങ്ങളും ഉണരേണ്ടിയിരിക്കുന്നു. കാസര്‍കോടിന്റെ മാത്രമല്ല കേരളത്തിന്റെ പൊതുവായ ജീവല്‍പ്രശ്‌നമാണ് എന്‍ഡോസള്‍ഫാന്‍ എന്ന് ജനങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് തിരിച്ചറിവുണ്ടായില്ലേ? കോര്‍പ്പറേറ്റ് ലോബികള്‍ രംഗത്തുവന്നുവെങ്കിലും മാധ്യമങ്ങള്‍ ഈ കാര്യത്തില്‍ ചെയ്ത സേവനങ്ങള്‍ നിസ്തുലമാണ്. എന്‍ഡോസള്‍ഫാന്റെ അന്തരാളഘട്ടത്തിലാണ് നാമിപ്പോള്‍. നിരോധനം തത്ത്വത്തില്‍ ഒരു മുന്നേറ്റമാണ്. എന്നാല്‍, സംയോജിത കീടനിയന്ത്രണത്തിന് ഈ മാരകവിഷം തന്നെ മതിയെന്ന് അന്യ സംസ്ഥാനങ്ങള്‍ തീരുമാനിക്കുന്ന ദുര്‍വിധിയുണ്ടാകുന്നു. കേരളത്തില്‍ മുഴുവന്‍ പലപേരുകളില്‍ മാവിന്‍തോപ്പുകളിലും തേയിലത്തോട്ടങ്ങളിലും ഇടവിളകളിലും ഈ വിഷപ്രയോഗം ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നുവെന്ന് അറിഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്നു.

ഭക്ഷ്യ-പോഷക-ഔഷധഗുണമുള്ള നാട്ടുഭക്ഷണ സംസ്‌കാരമുണ്ടായിരുന്ന നാട്ടില്‍ വിഷരഹിതഭക്ഷണം സ്വപ്നമാവുകയാണ്. ജൈവകാര്‍ഷികനയം പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ച സംസ്ഥാനമാണ് കേരളം. പക്ഷേ, കീട-കളനാശിനിക്കമ്പനികളുടെ അനുനയത്തില്‍ നാം വീണുപോയി. പെരിയാര്‍ മലിനമാകുന്നത് കീടനാശിനികള്‍ ഉത്പാദിപ്പിക്കാനാണ്. ചാലിയാറില്‍നിന്ന് കാതിക്കുടത്തേക്ക് ദൂരമധികമില്ല. കുട്ടനാടിന്റെ പരിസ്ഥിതിസംഘര്‍ഷങ്ങള്‍ക്കു കാരണം ടണ്‍ കണക്കിനുള്ള വിഷപ്രയോഗമാണ്. വിഷത്തിന്റെ വിഷമവൃത്തം പൂര്‍ത്തിയാകുമ്പോള്‍ പുതിയ ദുരന്തങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് കാതോര്‍ക്കാം.

പ്രകൃതിവിഭവങ്ങളുടെ കാര്യത്തില്‍ കേള്‍വികേട്ട കേരളത്തിന്റെ ഇന്നത്തെ ദയനീയാവസ്ഥയെപ്പറ്റിയുള്ള പഠനങ്ങള്‍ ഉണ്ടായിട്ടുണ്ടോ. പഞ്ചഭൂതങ്ങള്‍ തന്നെ തീറെഴുതി വില്പനച്ചരക്കാക്കുന്ന സമകാലത്തിലാണ് നാമിപ്പോള്‍. വിഭവങ്ങളില്‍നിന്ന് ജനങ്ങളെ ഒറ്റപ്പെടുത്തുന്ന തന്ത്രം വിജയിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നു. നീര്‍ച്ചോലകളില്‍ നിന്ന് കുപ്പിവെള്ളത്തിലേക്ക്. അതിയന്‍ വിത്തില്‍നിന്ന് മൊണ്‍സാന്റോയുടെ അന്തകന്‍ വിത്തിലേക്ക്. നാട്ടുഭക്ഷണത്തില്‍നിന്ന് ഫാസ്റ്റ്ഫുഡ്ഡിലേക്ക്. നാട്ടുചന്തകളില്‍നിന്ന് റിലയന്‍സ് മാര്‍ക്കറ്റുകളിലേക്ക്. കൈക്കുമ്പിളിലെ ആരോഗ്യം സൂപ്പര്‍ സ്‌പെഷലിസ്റ്റുകളിലേക്ക്. മണ്ണിന്റെ പശിമ, മഴകളുടെ അനുഗ്രഹം, ധാന്യങ്ങളുടെ പോഷകത്വം, ആയുസ്സിന്റെ അറിവ്, നാട്ടുകാവുകളുടെ നിറവ്, സസ്യങ്ങളുടെ ആരാമം, ജൈവവൈവിദ്ധ്യം, നാട്ടുകാരണവന്മാരുടെ ജ്ഞാനം എന്നിങ്ങനെ ഇവിടെയുള്ള സജീവസംസ്‌കൃതിയെപ്പറ്റിയുള്ള തിരിച്ചറിവുണ്ടാകുന്നില്ല. ആനകളെ കണികാണുന്ന കുന്നിന്‍ചെരിവുകളില്‍ ജെ.സി.ബി.യാണ് കാവല്‍നില്‍ക്കുന്നത്. വെള്ളം കുടിക്കാനെത്തുന്ന പുഴകളില്‍ മണല്‍ലോറികളുടെ വിഹാരമാണ്. സായന്തനം കാണാനെത്തുന്ന കടലോരങ്ങളില്‍ ബീച്ചുമാമാങ്കങ്ങളുടെ മാലിന്യങ്ങളും. മഴക്കാടുകളുടെ താഴ്‌വരകളില്‍ റിസോര്‍ട്ടുകള്‍. ഇന്ന് ഇക്കോ ടൂറിസത്തിന്റ പേരിലാണ് നമ്മുടെ കാടുകള്‍തന്നെ മലീമസമാകുന്നത്.

ഏറെ പ്രതീക്ഷനല്‍കുന്ന കോഴിക്കോട്ടെ പ്ലാസ്റ്റിക് രഹിതനഗരം പരാജയപ്പെടുന്നുവോ. അതിരപ്പിള്ളിയില്‍ ഈ ആശയം മുന്നേറുകയാണ്. നഗരത്തിലെ അനിവാര്യതയാണ് മാലിന്യങ്ങള്‍. ഉപഭോഗസംസ്‌കാരത്തിനു മാലിന്യങ്ങള്‍ തട്ടാന്‍ ഞെളിയന്‍പറമ്പുകള്‍ വേണം. ഇ-വേസ്റ്റുകളും കുന്നുകൂടുന്നു. എന്നാല്‍, ഗ്രാമങ്ങളാകട്ടെ ഉത്പാദനകേന്ദ്രങ്ങളായിരുന്നു. ഐങ്കുടികമ്മാളരും ഭക്ഷ്യോത്പന്നങ്ങള്‍ നിര്‍മിച്ചവരുമായ പാവപ്പെട്ടവരുടെ ഗ്രാമീണസാങ്കതികവിദ്യകളില്‍നിന്ന് നാം ഏറെ പുറകോട്ടുപോയി.

സന്തുലിതപാരിസ്ഥിതികബോധം നിറഞ്ഞ നാട്ടുവിജ്ഞാനങ്ങളുടെ ഗുരുകുലങ്ങള്‍ ഇടിച്ചുനിരത്തി പുതിയ പാപ്പാസുകോയ്മകള്‍ വിലസി. ഗവേഷണം പൊടിപൊടിക്കുമ്പോള്‍ ആരോഗ്യദായകമായ എത്രയോ നാട്ടിനങ്ങള്‍ കൈമോശം വന്നുപോയി. കണ്ണിലെണ്ണയൊഴിച്ച് ഉണ്ണികളെക്കാത്ത അമ്മുമ്മവൈദ്യവും നാട്ടുവൈദ്യവും പുതുസംസ്‌കാരത്തിന് കരടായി. സുചിത്വകേരളം സുന്ദരകേരളം എന്നതായിരുന്നു നമ്മുടെ ലക്ഷ്യം. മറ്റൊരു മഴക്കാലരോഗങ്ങള്‍ക്കൂടി കടന്നുവരാതിരിക്കാന്‍ പ്രവര്‍ത്തിക്കേണ്ടിയിരിക്കുന്നു. ചേട്ട അകത്തും ശീവോതി പുറത്തുമാകാതിരിക്കണം.

തിരുവനന്തപുരം: പരിസ്ഥിതിക്ക് ദോഷം സംഭവിക്കാതെ വികസന പദ്ധതികള്‍ നടപ്പാക്കുന്നതിന് സംസ്ഥാനത്ത് പരിസ്ഥിതി ആഘാത പഠനസമിതികള്‍ക്ക് രൂപം നല്‍കുമെന്ന് മുഖ്യമന്ത്രി ഉമ്മന്‍ചാണ്ടി പറഞ്ഞു.

കേരള സംസ്ഥാന ശാസ്ത്രസാങ്കേതിക പരിസ്ഥിതി കൗണ്‍സിലിന്റെ ആഭിമുഖ്യത്തില്‍ സംഘടിപ്പിച്ച 'പരിസ്ഥിതി' സെമിനാര്‍ ഉദ്ഘാടനം ചെയ്യുകയായിരുന്നു അദ്ദേഹം.

പരിസ്ഥിതി ആഘാത പഠനസമിതികള്‍ രൂപവത്കരിക്കുന്നതിനുള്ള രൂപരേഖ കേന്ദ്ര സര്‍ക്കാരിന് സമര്‍പ്പിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. കേന്ദ്രാനുമതി ലഭിച്ചാലുടന്‍ അവ നിലവില്‍വരും. നേരത്തെതന്നെ ഇത്തരമൊരു നിര്‍ദേശം കേന്ദ്രസര്‍ക്കാര്‍ സംസ്ഥാനത്തിന് നല്‍കിയിരുന്നുവെങ്കിലും പരിസ്ഥിതി ആഘാതപഠന സമിതികള്‍ വേണ്ടായെന്ന നിലപാടായിരുന്നു മുന്‍ സംസ്ഥാന സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ സ്വീകരിച്ചിരുന്നത്. പരിസ്ഥിതി ആഘാത പഠനസമിതികള്‍ നിലവില്‍ വരുന്നതോടെ വന്‍ വികസന പദ്ധതികള്‍ക്കുള്ള പാരിസ്ഥിതിക അനുമതി സംസ്ഥാനത്തിനുതന്നെ നല്‍കാനാകുമെന്നും മുഖ്യമന്ത്രി പറഞ്ഞു.

വികസനം എന്നത് ഇന്ന് ജീവിക്കുന്നവരുടെ പ്രശ്‌നമാണ്. പരിസ്ഥിതി സംരക്ഷണം നാളത്തെ തലമുറയുടെ പ്രശ്‌നവും. നാളെയെ മറന്നുള്ള വികസനം പാടില്ലെന്നതാണ് സംസ്ഥാന സര്‍ക്കാരിന്റെ നയം. വികസനത്തിനും പരിസ്ഥിതി സംരക്ഷണത്തിനും തുല്യപ്രാധാന്യം നല്‍കുന്ന സമീപനമാണ് സര്‍ക്കാരിനുള്ളതെന്നും മുഖ്യമന്ത്രി ഉമ്മന്‍ചാണ്ടി പറഞ്ഞു.

കോട്ടയം: കേരളത്തില്‍ ആകെ 57 എണ്ണം; ഈ പക്ഷി കൂടുവച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത് 20 മരങ്ങളില്‍ മാത്രം. ഉത്തരമലബാറിലെ കടല്‍ത്തീരത്ത് മാത്രം കാണപ്പെടുന്ന 'കമലപ്പരുന്ത്' എന്ന അപൂര്‍വയിനം പരുന്തിന്റെ കൂട് കാക്കാനും സംരക്ഷിക്കാനും ഒടുവില്‍ വനംവകുപ്പുതന്നെ രംഗത്ത്.

കേരളത്തില്‍ മാഹി മുതല്‍ കാസര്‍കോട് വരെ കടലിനോട് ചേര്‍ന്നുള്ള 150 കിലോമീറ്റര്‍ ദൂരത്ത് മാത്രമേ വംശനാശം നേരിട്ടുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന ഈ പരുന്തിനെ കാണാനാവൂ. കടല്‍ കാണാവുന്നത്ര ഉയരത്തിലുള്ള മാവ്, ആല്‍, പാല മരങ്ങളില്‍ മാത്രമേ ഇവ കൂടുകെട്ടൂ. വനംവകുപ്പ് ഈ വര്‍ഷമാദ്യം നടത്തിയ പ്രത്യേക സര്‍വേ അനുസരിച്ച് കൂടുള്ള ഈ 20 മരത്തില്‍ പത്തെണ്ണം സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ ഭൂമിയിലും പത്തെണ്ണം സ്വകാര്യ വ്യക്തികളുടെ പുരയിടത്തിലുമാണ് കണ്ടെത്തിയത്. സ്വകാര്യവ്യക്തികള്‍ മരം വെട്ടിയാല്‍ ഇവയുടെ നാശമാകും ഫലം. കൂടുള്ള മരങ്ങള്‍ വെട്ടിമാറ്റാതെ സംരക്ഷിക്കാന്‍ ഒന്‍പത് കുടുംബത്തിന് വനംവകുപ്പ് 5000 രൂപ വീതം അനുവദിച്ചിരിക്കുകയാണ്.

'വൈറ്റ് ബെല്ലീഡ് സീ ഈഗിള്‍' എന്ന ഈയിനം പരുന്തിന് കാനയ്ക്കന്‍, മുക്കുവത്തപ്പന്‍, മരീത്തലച്ചി, മീഞ്ചാടി എന്നിങ്ങനെ നാടന്‍പേരുകളുണ്ട്. കേരളത്തില്‍ ഈ പക്ഷിക്കുവേണ്ടി സര്‍വേ നടത്തുന്നത് ഇതാദ്യമായാണ്. കണ്ണൂര്‍ ഫൈ്‌ളയിങ് സ്‌ക്വാഡ് ഡി.എഫ്.ഒ. സി.ടി. ജോജുവിന്റെ നേതൃത്വത്തിലുള്ള സംഘമാണ് ജനവരി, ഫിബ്രവരി മാസങ്ങളില്‍ സര്‍വേ സംഘടിപ്പിച്ചത്.

പക്ഷിനിരീക്ഷകനും മലബാര്‍ നാച്വറല്‍ ഹിസ്റ്ററി സൊസൈറ്റി അംഗവുമായ ഡോ. ജാഫര്‍ പാലോട്ട്, കേരള ബയോഡൈവേഴ്‌സിറ്റി ബോര്‍ഡ് കാസര്‍കോട് ജില്ലാ കോ-ഓഡിനേറ്റര്‍ പി.കൃഷ്ണന്‍, 'സീക്ക്' പരിസ്ഥിതി സംഘടനാ പ്രതിനിധി ഡോ. ഇ.ഉണ്ണികൃഷ്ണന്‍, 'നെയ്തല്‍' പ്രകൃതിസംഘടനാംഗവും അധ്യാപകനുമായ പ്രവീണ്‍ കുമാര്‍ എന്നിവരും സംഘത്തിലുണ്ടായിരുന്നു.

കടല്‍ കാണാവുന്ന തരത്തില്‍ ഉയരമുള്ള മരങ്ങളിലാണ് ഇവ കൂടൊരുക്കുന്നതെന്ന് സി.ടി. ജോജു പറഞ്ഞു. ''ഒരു തവണ ഒന്നോ രണ്ടോ മുട്ടകളേ ഇടൂ. മുട്ട വിരിയിച്ചെടുത്താല്‍ ആരോഗ്യമുള്ള കുഞ്ഞുങ്ങളെ മാത്രമേ ഇവ ഭക്ഷണംനല്‍കി സംരക്ഷിക്കൂ. അതുകൊണ്ട് ഇവയുടെ വംശവര്‍ധനയുടെ തോത് വളരെ കുറവാണ്. 57 പക്ഷികളില്‍ 17 കുഞ്ഞുങ്ങള്‍ മാത്രമേയുള്ളൂ. സാധാരണ പരുന്തുകളുമായി ഇവ ഇണചേരില്ല. ഇക്കാരണത്താലാണ് ഇവയുടെ സംരക്ഷണത്തിന് പ്രത്യേക പരിഗണന നല്‍കുന്നത്. വന്യജീവി സംരക്ഷണനിയമത്തിലെ ഷെഡ്യൂള്‍ ഒന്നില്‍ ഉള്‍പ്പെട്ടകമലപ്പരുന്തിനെ പിടിക്കുന്നതും കൊല്ലുന്നതും ശിക്ഷാര്‍ഹമാണ്.

ഇരുന്നാല്‍ 80 സെ.മീ. ഉയരമുള്ള കമലപ്പരുന്തിന് സാധാരണ പരുന്തിനേക്കാള്‍ വലിപ്പമുണ്ട്. ചിറക് വിരിച്ചാല്‍ 2.2 മീറ്റര്‍ നീളം വരും. ദക്ഷിണേഷ്യയിലെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ പ്രാപ്പിടിയന്‍ പക്ഷിയായ കമലപ്പരുന്ത് വടക്കേ മലബാര്‍ കഴിഞ്ഞാല്‍ പിന്നെ കാണപ്പെടുന്നത് ആന്‍ഡമാന്‍ ദ്വീപില്‍ മാത്രം.

New Wastewater Treatment Technology in the Works

On June 24th, 2009, a new agreement between two research institutes was singed, stating that they would engage in actively looking for a new means of treating heavily polluted waters. At this point, the product is treated in regular decontamination plants, but these facilities are oftentimes inadequate to thoroughly clean all the harmful substances, which eventually find their way in the underground water, from where they reach people's homes. Now, the Nanyang Environment and Water Research Institute (NTU-NEWRI), based at the Nanyang Technological University, and the company Sembcorp Industries (Sembcorp) have taken it upon themselves to come along with an improved method of filtering wastewater.

The main goal of the three-year contract is to devise a treatment water that would remove “entrenched” organic matter from the wastes. At this point, mutated microorganisms, including bacteria, microbes and other parasites, do not die easily, mostly on account of the fact that exposure to some very damaging chemicals in the wastewater caused them to mutate and become immune to regular solutions treatment plants employed to destroy them.

The $1-million investment will see the new method being able to remove wastes that do not biodegrade as well. One good example of this is plastic, but also oil, which take tens to hundreds of years to break up in normal conditions. “We are happy to take our R&D collaboration with NTU-NEWRI a step further with this joint testbed for new wastewater treatment technology. This underscores Sembcorp's commitment to applying best available technology to meet our customers' water and wastewater treatment needs,” the President and CEO of Sembcorp Group, Mr. Tang Kin Fei, said, when the agreement was signed at the Singapore International Water Week (SIWW) 2009.

The “NTU team has developed an innovative patented process, which is well suited for the treatment of industrial wastewater. This process models nature's way of cleaning the water. It is likely that this technology can be more competitive than other technologies. We are happy to collaborate with Sembcorp and develop this testbed and explore the technology further,” the Principal Investigator for the NTU team, Associate Professor Volodymyr Ivanov, added.

“Launched in 2008, NEWRI provides a clearly defined window through which industry and research partners can access NTU's comprehensive EWT capabilities. This partnership with Sembcorp is a good demonstration of NEWRI's goal of translating cutting-edge new water technology research and bringing it to an industry eager to benefit society and lead in an expanding market,” the Executive Director of NTU-NEWRI, Professor Ng Wun Jern, concluded.

Hearty Welcome to Rev. Dr. Abraham Mulamoottil , New Chairman of Pushpagiri – ( Excerpts from an event organized by Merchant Association, Tiruvalla to honor Rev. Dr. Abraham Mulamoottil (chairman and Chief Executive of Pushpagiri Group of Institutions )

 

“We live in 2011, but He lives in 2025. He changed with times, changed with changes and now changing with anticipated future changes” Mr. Salim (President, Merchant Association) remarked about Rev. Dr. Abraham Mulamoottil. “He came to a uneven place for taking break, but he made that in to a highness by establishing MACFAST and Radio MACFAST 90.4. Now they become the pulse of people and prestige for the nation. His visions are outstanding and his missions are appreciable”. Mr. George Varghese Kunjumon said. While addressing the audience, Mr. Lalji projected Rev. Dr. Aabraham Mulamoottil as ‘Man of Integrity’. He said that Fr. Mulamoottil was the key person behind each pace of the developments of Central Travancore. Tiruvalla Pooram was a colorful event among these. 

Reiterating the vision of  Pushpagiri Group of Institutions, ‘We Care God Cures’, Rev. Dr.Abraham Mulamoottil  explained about the significance of services provided by Pushpagiri.  In response to the different views of dignitaries regarding the issue of waste in Tiruvalla, he put forward the concept of NIMBY (Not In My Backyard) Syndrome to IMBY (In My Back Yard) habit. Reiterating the importance of decentralization of waste management, he promised all the support of Clean and Green Tiruvalla project team for reaching an absolute solution to this issue. Addition to this, he suggested a ‘Green Label’ plan for shops which aims to ensure all the shops Clean and Green.
